Patron of the square is Jerzy Popiełuszko, chaplain of "Solidarity" and defender of human rights during a difficult period of Poland. In the center of the square stands a cross, and next to it a boulder devoted to the memory of the priest. Right next to the square there is a church of Sts. Charles Borromeo belongs to the parish of Sts. Andrew the Apostle.
Father Jerzy Popiełuszko lived up to his thirteenth birthday in the thirteenth floor of a tenement house on Chlodna Street, on one side of which lies the square. In 1984 he was assassinated by Security Service officers and in 2010 proclaimed the Blessed Catholic Church.
