Cistercian Abbey

Local name: Opactwo Cystersów

The Cistercian Abbey in Wąchock is one of the oldest in southern Poland. The Cistercians arrived here in 1179. It consists of the Romanesque church of St. Florian and Romanesque and Gothic monastic and economic buildings. In the church you can see carved columns of the 13th century and baroque frescoes covering its walls.

The monastery in Wąchock was founded by the Bishop of Gideon. He was the second Cistercian monastery in Malopolska after Jędrzejów. Its most important part is the Romanesque church of St. Florian. It consists of a three-nave basilica with a transept, arranged in yellow and red sandstone. One of the earliest in Poland is the cross-ribbed vaults. Roman sculpture is primarily sculpture - the geometric and vegetal decorations are on the heads of the columns. You can also see the rarely-seen motif of the winged Christ. A beautiful example of a Romanesque stonemason are the columns of the capitol.

The church's decoration is baroque and dates from the 18th century when the monastery was renovated. From this period comes the Baroque figural polychrome and the altars and pulpit.
