Located on the periphery of the Old Town Complex, the building of the drama theater named after William Horzyca is one of the oldest and best-known objects of this type in Poland. One can see the staging of art performed by a professional group of actors, also as part of the International Theater Festival "Kontakt" held here.
The institution was established in 1920 as the National Theater and was the first permanent, professional Polish stage in Toruń. From 1960, it functions under the present name occupying a building built in 1904 for the German theater. The current headquarters was built on the site of an earlier building, and its designers were very well-known Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer, creators of, among others, theaters in Vienna, Budapest, Augsburg, Zagreb and several other cities in Europe. Originally, the venue housed 900 spectators, but with time the auditorium has expanded and today many more people can participate in the performances. The contemporary image of the theater also differs from the original one, because some architectural decorations have been removed from it and the façade decoration has been simplified. The entrance to the theater is decorated with two statues of Melpomene and Terpsichore muse, unveiled in 1909.Less
