The Old Town Hall in Toruń is one of the largest brick buildings of this type on the continent and is the most important building in the city's Old Town. Currently, the building, restored and adapted to the exhibition functions, is the seat of the District Museum in Toruń.
Inside the museum you can see the original equipment and collections of Gothic art, old Polish painting and products of Toruń craftsmen. In the windows there are figurines of former burghers, made on the basis of a Gothic painting from the church in Toruń. From the top of the town hall tower there is a magnificent view of the historic Toruń and the Vistula river. The building was built in the fourteenth century on the model of similar Flanders buildings. A treasury, archive and prison were located in the tower, and beer and wine were served in the cellars. Cloth hall, stalls, bread benches and a courtroom were located on the ground floor. On the first floor, there was a meeting hall of the city council and a large Burghers Hall. The town hall was reconstructed at the beginning of the 17th century, assuming Mannerist features, and at the end of the century, a fire partially destroyed it. The object was rebuilt on the remains of the walls. Until the mid-twentieth century, the Old Town City Hall was the seat of municipal authorities, and during the Second World War served as a hospital. King Jan Olbracht died in the Toruń town hall and his heart lies in the church of Saints Janów.Less
