The characteristic, medieval tenement house of red brick with architectural elements in the Gothic style is considered the most probable place of birth of Nicolaus Copernicus. Inside, there is a museum presenting the decor from the 15th to the 18th century and a medieval interior layout and collections documenting the life and work of the creator of the heliocentric theory. The gem of the collection is the collection of Copernicus' groundbreaking work 'De Revolutionibus'. In the basement of the tenement house and the neighboring building there is a permanent exhibition entitled: "The World of Toruń Gingerbread."
The building in the mid-15th century belonged to the astronomer family, as one of two tenement houses in Toruń, and in this period it gained its present appearance. The second building at the Old Town Square has not been preserved until now.On the façade of the tenement house there is an ogive portal, recesses filled with painted, two-color decorations and brick friezes, typical of medieval buildings. In the fifteenth century, Toruń was a Hanseatic city, which is why the tenement house, in accordance with tradition, served both residential and warehouse functions, which can be seen by visiting its interiors.Less
