Located in the southeast corner of the old town's market, the Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Toruń is not only one of the most recognizable monuments in the city but also its very hallmark.
The figure of the astronomer has 2,6 m in length and was cast in 1853 in the workshop of famous Berlin sculptor Friedrich Tieck. The monument depicts the author of the heliocentrism theory in an academic dress with an armillary sphere in the left hand. It's the only depiction of the scientist with a light mustache. The monument was complemented by the inscription on the socle which informs that the depicted figure is Nicolaus Copernicus, the inhabitant of Toruń, the one who moved the earth and stopped the sun.The monument is the favorite meeting place of Toruń's inhabitants where important city ceremonies and regular events such meetings with the best students of Toruń's schools by the president of the city, Juwenalia with an interesting astronomer's costumes or the Santa Claus Hat in Christmas season are organized nearby.Less
