Toruń Cathedral

Local name: Katedra Świętych Janów

The Cathedral of Saints John's attracts attention with the furnishings of the interior, in which there are numerous works of sacred art, including Gothic paintings from the fourteenth century and a monumental medieval image depicting the Last Judgment.

From the Middle Ages comes the main altar, towering vaults and fragments of stained-glass windows. In the naves you can see over a dozen Renaissance and Baroque altars and many epitaphs. The most important monument is a chapel with a baptismal font in which Nicolaus Copernicus was baptized.

At the top of the cathedral tower there is the famous Tuba Bei, which is a bell weighing 7 tons, cast in the 1500s, the sound of which accompanied the kings entering the city and important events. Today, the bell is used only a few times a year due to vibrations that pose a serious threat to the historic tower. From its peak you can see a beautiful panorama of the city, and apparently touching the heart of the bell foretell happiness.

The cathedral has a long history. Its construction began in the Middle Ages, and after about 200 years of building walls, work was stopped. Only partially erected church served as a parish church, to this day remaining the most important temple of the Old Town. From the middle of the 16th century, the church was partly managed by Lutherans, and at the end of the century, the Jesuits took over. Since 1992, the temple has the rank of a cathedral.
