The Artus Court in Toruń comes from the late nineteenth century and is the successor of an earlier building that was of great importance to the city. In the present, richly decorated interiors, take place cultural events, exhibitions and concerts of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the monumental façade, the pavement with carved plaques in the shape of Toruń's Katarzynek, containing the names of people associated with Toruń, also attracts attention.
The original Gothic structure was built in the 14th century and served Toruń until 1802, when it was demolished due to poor technical condition. The richly equipped manor house was the seat of merchant brotherhoods, to which the wealthiest inhabitants of the city belonged, as well as the venue of national and provincial parliamentarians meetings. Here, too, took place a historic event, which was the signing of the second peace of Toruń in 1466.In the old building there was also an inn, in which even kings hosted. At the end of the 17th century, the building was also used for religious purposes until its demolition. The new building was erected several dozen years later and was smaller and more modest than its predecessor. Ultimately, it hosted the city theater. This building was also demolished to open the Artus Court in 1891, which we can admire to this day.Less
