The castle in Szymbark, also known as the fortress of Gładyszów, is a massive Renaissance fortress, according to experts, an excellent example of the architecture of the castle, a fortified building. I belong to the once members of the family Gładysz.
The lands where the castle was built in Szymbark in 1540 were given by Kazimierz the Great to the knight, Jan Gładysz. After the Gładysz family the castle was also inhabited by other families until the end of the 18th century. Later, the building had a variety of functions (including distilleries and warehouses) and with time declined, and in recent years it has been renovated both from the outside and inside.
Famous legends are associated with Gładyszów. One of them assumed the rise of four towers of the court in order to separate the daughter of Gładysz, each of a different character. According to another in the cave under the court, hidden treasures were guarded by the devils.
