Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes
Local name: Zamek Książąt Pomorskich
Located on the peninsula of Trzesiecko Lake in Szczecinek, the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes is a medieval, thoroughly reconstructed building with a hotel and conference center. The castle is surrounded by the 19th-century city park.
In the beginning, the castle was situated on the island. Because of the gradual decrease in water level of the lake and the amelioration of its banks, the island has become a peninsula. At the beginning of the 17th century, it belonged to the Pomeranian Dukes and served as 'oprawa wdowia' - financial security provided for duke's widows. Later, in this century, its purpose had changed. The small factory, and then refuge and hospital operated here. After World War II, it was occupied by the resort hostel of Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society. The current look of the castle doesn't resemble the original 14th-century Gothic building at all. It was caused by reconstructions carried out in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It's a brick, rectangular building with white corners and gabled roof. The art gallery operates in its cellars while upper floors consist of rooms and conference halls which can hold up to 150 people.Less
