The White Eagle Square, also known as the Horse Market because of the former horse mill, is one of the most beautiful places in Szczecin. One of the most interesting attractions of the square is the White Eagle Fountain. There had been many representational buildings at the square, only some of which have survived to our times.
Currently, northern and western frontages are decorated with pre-war tenement houses. Furthermore, in the western frontage are the headquarters of the Art Academy, the Palace Under the Globe, and the Ionian Palace. In the eastern frontage there is an old department store where now a restaurant is situated. In the southern frontage, there used to be tenement houses, but they have been demolished, and a parking lot has been built and trees have been planted in that place. The current name of the square comes from the fountain, which is located there. It is the oldest facility of this type in the city. It was built in the Baroque style and is dated back to the 18th century. Its lower part has a shape of a basin in the form of four-leaf clover. The fountain is topped by a mountain of stones with a sculpture of eagle with wings spread out. During World War II, it was covered with a large amount of sand and gravel, which is why it has survived to our times in its original form.Less
