Palace under the Globe

Local name: Pałac pod Globusem

The Art Academy of Szczecin is currently located in the historic Palace Under the Globe. The palace had been built in the first half of the 18th century in the Baroque style, however, due to significant renovation works at the end of the 19th century, nowadays it has a rather eclectic form. Parts of the interior have been preserved in original style, including corridors, staircases, and some of the rooms.

The name of the palace comes from the figure of the globe that tops the building. It was a symbol of international bussiness run by the "National" Insurance Company, which had its headquarters there in the 19th century. The company was also responsible for the reconstruction of the building. Earlier this place had been known as the Grumbkow's Palace, from the name of its owner, the Main President of the Pomeranian Province of Philip Otton von Grumbkow. Also, in this place was born and raised the future wife of Tsar Paul I, Duchess Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg who, after ascending the throne, took the name Maria Feodorovna.
