The island, also known as Grodzka Kępa, is nowadays, during the holiday season, the center of social life in Szczecin. There is a yacht marina, the Municipal Summer Zone, where DJs give concerts in the evenings and parties, and a summer beach. There is also a beautiful, panoramic view of the city.
The first traces of settlement on the island come from the late Neolithic. In the Middle Ages, butchers resided here, from which it took its later German name - Schlächterwiese (Butcher's Island). From the end of the 18th century, industry developed here, functioning until the beginning of the 20th century.
The river island on the Oder, with an area of 15 ha, is currently uninhabited, although during the summer holidays it becomes very busy and bustling. It is located opposite Wały Chrobrego, and is connected with the neighboring Łasztownia by a drawbridge.
