Church of St. John the Evangelist

Local name: Kościół św. Jana Ewangelisty

Church of Saint John the Evangelist in Szczecin is a gothic temple. This is the last preserved building of the Franciscan monastery complex. The most valuable fragments of the church are polychromies from the 15th and 16th centuries. They show Mary in a mandorla surrounded by saints, a boy with the coat of arms of Szczecin, the nuptials of Saint Catherine and floral ornaments.

The first Franciscan monastery was wooden, while the church was built of brick. It was built in stages - a brick presbytery was built first around 1300. The main body was probably built in the second half of the 14th century. In the 15th century, 10 chapels were built between the buttresses.

During the Reformation, the monks had to leave the monastery. Since that time, until the end of the World War II, the church had been an Evangelical church. In the 16th century, the monastery buildings were changed into the Saint John hospital. However, the church continued to perform religious functions.

In the years 1957-1958 a general renovation of the building after war damage has been carried out. The temple was handed over to the Pallottines. The building is part of the European Route of Brick Gothic.
