The Monument to the Victims of December 1970, also known as the Angel of Freedom, commemorates the victims of the December events of 1970. During the protests of the workers repressed by militia and military, 16 people had died. The 11-meter-tall bronze statue, weighing nearly 10 tonnes, it represents an angel holding a crown of thorns in his hands, which forms the inscription "December 1970". The names of the fallen were engraved on the granite slabs around the statue.
The monument was built thanks to the efforts of municipal councilmen and the Association 'December 1970 - January 1971', and the history of the beginning of its construction dates back to the 1990s. Eventually, it was created according to the project of Czesław Dźwigaj. Its solemn unveiling took place on 28th of August, 2005, during the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements.Less
