Śrem Market Square

Local name: Rynek w Śremie

The market in Śrem is the historic, main square of the city, through which the commercial route was in the past. It has a rectangular shape and is surrounded by tenement houses dating back to the 19th century. The most impressive building of the Market Square is the neo-Renaissance town hall. At present, the Square is called the Square of October 20 in honor of the victims of the German executed on October 20, 1939.

The market was laid out in the 16th century and initially reached the parish church. It was primarily a market square and a city transport center. Its present development dates back to the nineteenth century. The eclectic houses on the market have decorative Baroque and Classicist elements in the façades. The oldest tenement house stands on the corner of ul. Kosciuszko. It was built in 1827.

The biggest building on the Market Square is the Town Hall. Its body refers to the Italian Renaissance. It is a two storey building with symmetric projections and a small clock tower.
