Kórnik Castle

Local name: Zamek w Kórniku

Inscribed into the list of Historic Monuments, a castle nowadays acts as a seat of the museum and Kórnik Library of Polish Academy of Sciences. Inside the castle there are many unique exhibits. Most interesting of them are national and historic relics from different ages: body armors, paintings of Polish kings, hetmans, as well as family portraits of Działyńscy and Zamoyscy. What is interesting, many paintings were created by great artists, like: Bacciarelli, Rubens, Grottger, J. P. Norblin.

The castle, that we can admire nowadays, was built in a Neo-gothic English style. It is surrounded by a fosse and picturesque park. The entrance to the castle is from the north side and is characterized by the Tudor arch at the top of the main window. At the west side there is a terrace with a view at Kórnickie lake and “Zwierzyniec”.  The south side is predominated by chaitya arch, while from the east side there is a neo-gothic tower rising above the castle.

During the centuries the castle itself was owned by many distinguished families. It was a home to Działżyński, Górka and Czarnkowski families.  The most famous owner of the castle was Teofila Szołdrska Potulicka from Działyńscy family, known as White Lady.
