Kórnik Arboretum

Local name: Arboretum w Kórniku

The arboretum in Kórnik is the largest and oldest in Poland, as well as the fourth largest dendrological garden in Europe. It was founded in the first half of the 19th century by Tytus Działyński. It is looked after by the Polish Academy of Sciences, which makes it available to tourists. The pride of this collection of trees and shrubs from around the world are cypress trees with an overhead root system and magnolias blooming in May. The Dendrological Museum operates at the arboretum.

Tytus Działyński founded the English park in Kórnik around 1830. He brought to him seedlings of trees and shrubs from around the world, including distant Japan or China. The first garden establishment was destroyed at the end of the 19th century, when the owners of the property had to flee from Prussian authorities to Galicia. Another flourishing of the collection came in the interwar period, and the work is currently being continued by the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The arboretum has an area of 40 hectares. Over 3500 species of ornamental trees and shrubs have been gathered here. Many of them come from other climate zones and are not found in Poland. The oldest cypress plants in Poland grow in Kórnik. There are also large communities of magnolia, azaleas, rhododendrons, but also cherry, birch or forsythia growing widely in our country.
