Under the surface of Rzeszów Market Square 396 m of the underground route is concealed. It leads through the network of passages and cellars which date back to the period between the 14th and 18th century. They were used on a daily basis as shops and storages and during wars and Tatar invasions as a shelter. During World War II Jews escaping from ghettos were hiding there.
When business in Rzeszów began to decline, cellars has been buried and walled up. In the 1960s, because of sedimentary waters that got to the surface, cellars began to collapse what posed a threat to the market. It was decided to secure them using mining methods under the strict archeological and conservational supervision. This way, in 2001 Rzeszów Cellars have been discovered anew. Spreaded across three floors they go 10m down.Cellars and passages have names that refer to their functions and history: Cellar of Mercers, Rzeszowscy Cellar, Honey Cellar, Tatar Dungeons, Heraldic Passage. Exhibition of replicas of knight's armor, white weapon, firearms and usable ceramics is organized there.Less
