Built in 1610, the Old Town Synagogue is one of the oldest synagogues in Subcarpathia. In the past, it was known as the Old or the Small School because it is smaller than the New Town Synagogue located nearby. In 1987 the synagogue was entered in the register of objects of cultural heritage. Nowadays, the synagogue is used as the headquarters for the State Archive and Jew History Research Center.
The synagogue is a small building made of stone, with annexes and the cylindrical tower which was used as a prison (Jew communities had their own court system). It was the 3rd new Polish synagogue project - on a square plan, with the cone-shaped roof. The synagogue burned many times throughout its history, it had also been destroyed during wars and invasions. Its present shape is the result of the renovation works which took place at the turn of the 1960s. The shape of the building is far from original, nothing was left from the equipment. The Jewish cemetery that was located nearby also has been destroyed.Less
