Old Cemetery in Rzeszów is a necropolis that covers 3,65ha. It was founded at the end of 18th century. It currently has 622 tombs and tombstones. Tombstones are carved in various styles, where classic, romantic and neo-gothic are the most common. The cemetery together with the church was entered in the register of objects of cultural heritage.
The examples of a sacral art of stonemasonry can be seen while walking through the alleys - obelisks, gravestone monuments and also decorated columns and crosses. Many of them was made by famous Cracow and Lviv sculptors - Józef Kulesza and Julian Markowski among others.History of the necropolis is long and tumultuous. It was built during Joseph II reign who prohibited burying in the city. The cemetery had been functioning until 1910, however, funerals had been organized there during World War II. In the times of occupation, the cemetery was destroyed and plundered. It was entered in the register of objects of cultural heritage in the 1960s.
