The oldest Przemyśl's bridge on the San is probably the only object in Poland designed by Gustave Eiffel, author of the famous tower in Paris. Its latticework structure makes it one of the most characteristic buildings in Przemyśl. The bridge is located between stations Zasanie and Przemyśl Główny. The beautiful panorama of the city stretches behind the windows of trains passing it. Because of its strategical position, the object played an important role in the turbulent city's history.
The bridge was built in 1860 for railway line Vienna-Lviv but its current shape was achieved in 1891. In 1915, it was blown by the crew of capitulating Przemyśl Fortress and rebuilt one year later. In 1918, the battles for the city between Poland and Ukraine took place here. The bridge was also the border between two occupants of Przemyśl in 1939-1941 and the place Germans and Soviets fought for between each other. In 1944, the bridge was saved from blowing up by the soldiers of the Home Army who defused the bombs. The patron of the object is president of Przemyśl holding an office in 1944. Tadeusz Porembalski, engineer related to the oil industry, led the facility which protected the bridge from destruction during his service in the Polish Army.Less
