Market Square in Przemyśl

Local name: Rynek w Przemyślu

The market in Przemysl is unique due to its sloping terrain. Around the square are historic tenement houses, and in its center is the famous fountain, in the middle of which is the sculpture of a bear - the animal symbolizing the city. Nearby, on the west side, there is a statue of the Good Soldier Svevka.

The market dates back to the fourteenth century. Initially surrounded by wooden buildings, which one hundred years later rebuilt using bricks and stone. The square originally served as a marketplace where merchants were selling their goods. There was also a town hall, which was demolished in the sixteenth century and never rebuilt.

To date, only three fronts have been preserved - north, south and east. The main attraction of the market is a fountain located in front of the City Hall. At its center was a cast sculpture depicting a bear. The whole was founded by the craftsmen of Przemysl in 1964.
