Church of Our Lady in Summo

Local name: Kościół NMP in Summo

There is no other church in Poland with longer history, than a small Church of Our Lady in Summo in Ostrów Tumski. A temple is standing on the site of Mieszko the First palas and a chapel founded by his wife Dąbrówka. Most probably under the presbytery lies the remains of a rotunda, where the first ruler of Poland's wife was buried, as well as the first polish bishop Jordan.

Through the ages, church was rebuild and reconstructed several times. Present building is preserved in a Gothic style. It was built of a red brick interlaced with glazed brick, and its top is filled with plastered in white blends. High roof is covered with dingy roof tiles. In the base of the building one can see a boulder with characteristic channels, that were made due to the sharpening swords, which was supposed to give them supernatural power.

It is a hall church with a three aisles supported on pillars. Aisles are covered with stellar vaults, presbytery and sagittal ambulatory. Side walls are divided by lesenes, between which are placed ogival windows. Interior polychrome, stained glass and an altar were designed in 1954-56 by Wacław Taranczewski.
