Beautiful Well in Nysa is a monument which owes its name to rich decorations. The intricately sculpted grid by Wilhelm Hedwig is the city's pride to this day. In the past, however, it had been preventing water from poisoning. The well is one of the oldest water sources in the country which operated until the foundation of waterworks.
The first mentions of the well in Nysa date back to the Thirty Years' War when Swedens, in an attempt to force the city to surrender, poisoned all its water sources. The only uncontaminated source was the well on Wrocławska Street. According to the legend, it was always protected by soldiers but despite that spies managed to poisoned it what resulted in the capitulation of the city. The current structure of Beautiful Well is a result of changes which were carried out in order to prevent its contamination. Secured by the solid grid, it was used by inhabitants until 1880.Numerous flower, animal and plant themes makes the well hard to miss. Despite it is unoperational now, the monument is a hallmark of Nysa.Less
