High Tower, Powder Tower - these names refer to the monumental tower on the defensive walls of Namysłów over the Krakow Gate. In the Middle Ages she guarded the entrance to the city. Today, restored, it is a viewpoint - one of the tourist attractions of Namysłów.
The construction of defensive walls in Namysłów began in the mid-fourteenth century. The brick structure, set on a foundation made of field stone, was 6 m high and its thickness was up to 2 m. Only a few hundred meters of the wall have survived to this day. Two picturesque, arcaded culverts survived in it, through which the arm of the Widawa river flows. The wall was already crowned with towers in the fifteenth century, of which there were apparently 45. The first four were built above the main gates to the city. The most magnificent, 26 m high, guarded the Krakow Gate. Until the 18th century it served defensive functions, which gave it the name of the Powder Tower. It is currently open to visitors. Whoever climbs the stairs with 146 steps, as a reward will be able to admire the panorama of Namysłów.
