Museum of the Zawkrze Land

Local name: Muzeum Ziemi Zawkrzeńskiej

The Museum of the Zawkrzeń Region in Mława presents collections in the fields of archeology, history, art and nature. Particularly noteworthy is the bust of a pagan deity - the only exhibit survived from plunder in 39 years. In one of the halls there are souvenirs related to John Paul II. There are also temporary exhibitions related to important anniversaries, presentations of artists and distinguished figures from the region. The facility offers museum lessons.

Historic Zawkrze encompassed the area beyond Wkra, viewed from Płock. It ceased to exist as a territorial unit after the Second Partition in 1795, but did not lose its separateness. The diversity of the cultural heritage of this region is due to the fact that from the early Middle Ages to World War II it was a borderland.

The museum was founded in 1929. After losing the Polish-German war, most of the collections, taken by the occupation authorities to Königsberg, were lost. The institution's operations resumed in 1963.
