Museum of the Międzyrzecz Land

Local name: Muzeum Ziemi Międzyrzeckiej

The Museum of the Międzyrzecz Land collects and presents exhibits related to the history, culture, and art of the region. The permanent exhibition "Thousand years of Międzyrzecz" is displayed since 1965 while "Germans and other inhabitants of Międzyrzecz" since 2012. Apart from items from excavations and objects of folk culture, worthy of attention is also the rich collection of coffin portraits.

The facility dates back to 1946 when the first exhibition was presented in the local community center. Three years later, it was given its own headquarters - monumental buildings of Starostwo - in which it operates to this day. The museum has four following departments: archeological, historical, art, and folk culture. Among hundreds of exhibits, there are items from excavations, manuscripts with royal privileges, city and guild stamps, and city books.

The collection of coffin portraits is a real jewel of the museum. It contains 42 portraits, 19 plaques with inscriptions, and 148 plaques with coats of arms from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are examples of old burial traditions of the local people and also szlachta who adopted them after settling here.
