Church of assumption of our Lady of Victory

Local name: Kościół Matki Bożej Zwycięskiej

The church was built in honor of winning the fight against the Teutonic Knights at Grunwald. The temple was founded by King Władysław Jagiełło at the beginning of the fifteenth century. There is no original equipment inside, except for the polychrome in the attic. A most important object inside is the oldest picture in the city.

The current neo-Gothic interior decoration dates back to 1901. The most valuable work of art is covered on a day-to-day basis. This fifteenth-century painting is painted on a wooden board and depicts Saint Bridget. 17th century paintings that were put in the stalls are also associated with the figure of the saint. The original polychromes present the entrance of the king's retinue to the city.

The church was built after winning the battle with the Teutonic Knights. King Jagiełło brought the Brigidine Sisters to the temple, because it was believed then that Saint Bridget foretold the defeat of the order and a brave ruler who punished them. According to one legend, the temple was built by the Teutonic prisoners themselves.
