Benedictine Abbey

Local name: Opactwo Benedyktynów

The Benedictine Abbey in Lubiń is one of the oldest monastic centers in Poland. This is a very interesting architectural monument, which dates back to the 11th century. Older Romanesque elements have been preserved in the current baroque temple.

The beginnings of the monastery in Lubiń are associated with Benedictine foundations, which were carried out after the invasion of Brzetysław and pagan riots around the middle of the 11th century. Its founder was Bolesław Śmiały, and subsequent rulers took care of him. According to tradition, Prince Władysław Laskonogi was buried in the grave chapel added to the Romanesque church. The monastery also fulfilled important cultural functions, was a mainstay of science and had a huge library. It was taken from Lubinia after the dissolution of the order by the Prussian authorities. The Benedictines returned to the monastery only after World War I.

The center of the monastery is the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The building today is primarily of Baroque character, but its body features elements of earlier temples. Fragments of Romanesque walls were unveiled in the barrel-vaulted nave. In turn, the tower standing on the Romanesque foundations has a Gothic shape, although it is covered by a Baroque helmet. The interior of the temple is in the Baroque style. Paintings covering the vault and altars come from this period.
