Ruins of the Łowicz Castle

Local name: Ruiny zamku w Łowiczu

Built at the beginning of the 14th century, the Gothic castle served as a residence for Polish primates in the times of First Rzeczpospolita. The monument was almost completely destroyed, only part of the walls preserved. The ruins are private property but are open to the public. Archeological works are carried out here.

According to chronicler Janko of Czarnków, the wooden gord existed here before the primate's castle was built on the marsh of the Bzura River in the 11th century. The brick, Gothic castle was built by Archbishop Jarosław Bogoria of Skotniki in about 1355. In the 17th century, during the Swedish Deluge, the castle was taken over and almost completely destroyed.

Preserved drawings from the times of the castle's glory present the building as a defensive construction composed of two parallelly placed buildings connected with the gate tower.
