Market Squre in Leszno

Local name: Rynek w Lesznie

The market is the main square of Leszno. It is located in the Old Town. It is an irregular quadrilateral and is surrounded by picturesque tenements mostly from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Baroque town hall is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Wielkopolska.

The market was laid out in the 16th century, but probably already before the market square. At its center stood the first Renaissance town hall in the first half of the 17th century. The present, baroque shape gave it a redevelopment after the great fire of 1656. The Town Hall is a rectangular, three-storey building, towered over by a tall, slim clock tower. Corners are adorned with Corinthian columns, and the main facade of Leszno's coat of arms and larger noble families in the area.

The square is surrounded by low neoclassical and eclectic tenement houses. Most of them are from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Previous buildings burned almost completely in the fire of the end of the 18th century. There is only one Baroque arcade. It stands at number 29 and houses today a hotel.
