Szeroka Street (Wide Street) in Cracow was once a shopping center of Kazimierz, today it is a lively meeting place with cafes, restaurants and galleries. It took its final shape in the sixteenth century. It is surrounded by historic tenements and a Jewish cemetery. At its southern end, there is the oldest synagogue in Poland - the Old Synagogue.
The medieval Szeroka Street was the main axis of the village of Bawół. At the time of the location of the city, smaller villages were incorporated into its area, and so Bawół became part of Kazimierz. The street became the center of life for the local residents, there were as many as four synagogues next to it, among others, the no longer existing house of prayer "Na Górce" and the mikveh preserved to this day.On Szeroka St. in 2006, a monument of a diplomat and activist of the Underground State - Jan Karski, a witness of the Holocaust, an honorary citizen of the State of Israel, honored with the title Righteous Among the Nations - was erected.Less
