The Old Town district, recognized in its entirety as a historical monument, was established in the fourteenth century and until the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was an independent city. There are many monuments inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including several synagogues, churches and cemeteries, as well as museums, theaters and galleries. Every year the Jewish Culture Festival takes place here.
