Old Synagogue

Local name: Stara Synagoga

Old Synagogue is a part of the former religious and administrative center of a Jewish community located in Kraków's Kazimierz. Today, the building is occupied by the museum dedicated to Jewish religious holidays, the synagogue and its history.

The collection consists of, among others, the scroll with the text of Tora, compulsory women and men dresses, handicraft, photographs, paintings, illustrations presenting Jewish traditions and religious rituals. The exhibition in women hall shows family and private lives, starting from traditional meals, to prayers, and ending on studying, wedding, marriage, and other traditions. A characteristic feature of the exposition is the detailed description of display units.

The synagogue is the oldest preserved synagogue in Poland, its history dates back to the 15th century. The original construction drew inspiration from Gothic German churches. Later that century, it gained Renaissance features and, in the next centuries, a vestibule, two halls for women, and an administration building of a Jewish Community. During the war, the synagogue operated as a German magazine. The object was renovated in the years between 1956 and 1959.
