St. Florian's Basilica

Local name: Bazylika św. Floriana

St. Florian's Church in Kraków is located in the place of former Kleparz Settlement. The first church, consecrated by Bishop Wincenty Kadłubek, was built here in the 12th century. It burnt and was rebuilt many times. The present church comes from the 17th century and is built in Baroque style. The interior consists of late-Baroque and Rococo features, and numerous decorations designed by prominent architect Franciszek Mączyński.

The location of the church is related to the legend of Saint Florian bringing relics to Poland. It says that oxen which carried his remains stood in this place and didn't move until the decision to built here a dedicated church wasn't made.

The church is related to the few known Polish people. In 1818, the coffin with Tadeusz Kościuszko's remains was entombed here. Stanisław Wyspiański married Teofilia Pytkówna here. In the period between 1949 and 1951, the church's vicar was Karol Wojtyła.
