St. Andrew's Church

Local name: Kościół św. Andrzeja

St. Andrew's Church is a stone Latin church with Baroque interior founded in the 11th century by Sieciech, Count palatine of Prince Władysław Herman. It preserved its original Romanesque shape. It was entered in the register of nonmovable heritage objects of Lesser Poland Voivodeship by the National Heritage Board of Poland.

The church has a defensive character. Evidence of this in is thick walls (1,6 m), and no windows in the lower part of the building. In the past, it was main church of Okół Settlement - a smaller gord at the foot of Wawel Gord. According to Jan Długosz, St. Andrew's Church was a center of defense of inhabitants against Mongols in 1241. Two years later, the building had been surrounded by moat and rampart by Prince Konrad Mazowiecki during battles for the Kraków's throne. Because it was burnt and destroyed many times, the Romanesque interior was made into Baroque.

The church is administered by the Poor Clares whose monastery is attached to it.
