Popper Synagogue

Local name: Synagoga Poppera

Popper Synagogue is a monument of Baroque architecture. It was built in the 17th century, its founder was Wolf Popper, a Jewish merchant and financier known in Krakow. Visitors can admire the barrel vault in the main prayer room and a tri-axial gate with a reconstructed Hebrew inscription.

During the Second World War, the Germans almost completely destroyed the interior of the synagogue. Only the door of the altar cabinet Aron ha-kodesz with the carved decoration, which represents the lion, eagle, leopard and deer, has survived. This monument is currently in a private museum in Jerusalem.

Today, the synagogue is an important point on the cultural map of the Kazimierz district, there is, among others, an art workshop for children and young people. During the annual Jewish Culture Festival, artistic workshops are held here. Visitors can also take part in author's evenings and concerts.
