Liban Quarry in Kraków was established at the end of the 19th century. It belonged to Liban&Ehrenpreis. Limestone was mined here. Its founder - Bernard Liban - was a famous industrialist. In the years between 1942 and 1944, a labor camp for Polish people operated here. Today, it's a place of commemoration and haven of many bird species.
In 1873, the huge hall was built in the quarry's center. Steel lime kilns were put next to the walls. Their remainings preserved to this day. The railroad siding was connected to the quarry.During the times of occupation, Polish prisoners from Baudienst camp were forced to backbreaking labor - breaking limestone and carrying it. The monument and plaque commemorating workers were unveiled next to the mass grave.In 1993, the scenography for the movie "Schindler's List" by Steven Spielberg was set up here. For this purpose, watchtowers and barracks were built in the quarry. Parts of the scenography remained to this day.Less
