Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria

Local name: Kościół św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej

Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, located in the Kraków's Kazimierz is a perfect example of Middle Gothic architecture. Apart from the church itself, the complex also consists of the monastery of Augustinians.

Despite the structure being Gothic, the interior consists of monuments from different times and represents various art styles. The most interesting pieces of art are the Renaissance allegorical painting "Wheel of Death", the Baroque altar, and the wooden figure of Saint Rita from the first half of the 20th century. The rough Gothic St. Monica Chapel (so-called Hungarian Chapel) with the Baroque and Mannerist altar also brings attention.

The church was established in 1342 when Augustinians were brought to the city. Since that time, its history was very turbulent. It fell victim to two earthquakes, was used as a magazine, lazaret, and dormitory. Since the 1970s, the conservation works, which almost brought it back to its former glory, are carried out.
