Isaac Synagogue

Local name: Synagoga Izaaka

Isaac Synagogue, also known as Ajzyk Synagogue, was built in the 17th century. It was named after its founder. It was built in late-Baroque style on rectangular base. The richly decorated interior brings attention with the barrel vault with lunettes, Renaissance arcades, and polychromy. The synagogue was entered in the register of objects of cultural heritage.

The decoratively framed polychromies with liturgical texts are situated mostly in the main hall. The church porch for women was painted with polychromies which were ordered by wealthy women attending the synagogue. It is one of the few preserved decorations of that type in Poland.

According to the legend, Isaac dreamt about a treasure buried under the bridge in Prague. He embarked on a journey to find it but was stopped by a squad of soldiers at the place. One of the soldiers told him his dream about a treasure hidden in the stove of Ajzyk Jakubowicz. Isaac came back to his house, dismantled the stove, found big treasure, and built the synagogue.
