The Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University is the oldest object of that type in Poland. Its greenhouses consist of tropical plants. External collections contain plants mentioned in the Bible, protected, decorative, aquatic, medicinal, domesticated, alpine garden, arboretum, plant taxonomy, and plant biology. There are also a weather station and a former astronomical observatory.
The Botanical Garden was established in 1783 in the place of former garden of the Czartoryski Family which was a property of Jesuits since 1752. In the beginning, the garden covered area of around 2,4 ha. It was designed as a French Baroque park. Today, it has an area of 9,6 ha.In the years between 1788-1792, an astronomical observatory, called Śniadecki Collegium, was built. It is currently occupied by the Institute of Botany of the Jagiellonian University. Collection of tropical plants are housed by three greenhouses: Victoria, Jubileuszowa, and Holenderka.Less
