Bernatek Footbridge

Local name: Kładka Ojca Bernatka

The footbridge of Father Bernatka on the Vistula River was created on the basis of the design of the Author's Design and Art Studio of Professor Andrzej Getter, in 2009-2010. Two piers intended for pedestrian and bicycle traffic connect the tourist district of Kazimierz with Podgórze.

The footbridge was named in honor of Laetus Bernatka, a member of the Order of Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God and the initiator of the construction of the hospital of the Order of Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God in Kraków. It was built on the site of the former bridge of Franz Joseph I, commonly called the Podgórski bridge.

The Bernatka footbridge has become a meeting place for lovers who fasten padlocks on their railings with their initials and confessions, and then throw the keys into the river as a sign of the permanence of their feelings.

She was awarded many times, won among others in the bridge competition named after Maksymilian Wolf. She also received a distinction for interesting illumination.
