Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Local name: Bazylika Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Kraków is an example of Young-Polish architecture drawing inspiration from Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque constructions. The church's architect was Franciszek Mączyński. It is one of the main sanctuaries dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Poland. The church' painting and sculpting decorations refer to that subject.

The church was built for Jesuits at the beginning of the 20th century. It was built from red brick according to Gothic and Romanesque standards. Reinforced concrete was used for the first time in Kraków for making a vault. 68-meter tower, one of the tallest in Kraków, stands at the facade. Sculpting details and frames of windows and doors are made of gray stone.

Sculptures at the facade were designed by Xawery Dunikowski. The monument of Mączyński, located in the church, is also one of his works. The mosaic and the Young-Polish polychrome on the vault were designed by Jan Bukowski. The 30-meter long mosaic depicting adoration of Christ by Polish saints and blessed is situated inside. The valuable sculpture of Angelic Mother of God can be seen at the side altar.
