The towering, neo-gothic temple was built in the 19th century. The origin of its creation is connected with the influx of people in the vicinity of Katowice, caused by the industrialization of Upper Silesia. This is one of the most impressive churches in Katowice.
Despite the great plans to build a really huge temple, a modest version of it was finally erected - a single-nave, four-span version, adjoined by a number of side chapels. The church is decorated with a 71 m high tower below which there are porches. St. Mary's Church in Katowice is not a typical neo-gothic temple - it was built from a dolomite mined nearby instead of a brick.Inside the church there are many valuable pieces of equipment. The most important ones include paintings of the "Marian Cycle" by Józef Unierzyski. Interesting and noteworthy are also stained-glass windows of the church - on the right side of the nave they show symbols of Christian virtues, and on the left the symbols of sins.Less
