Parachute tower

Local name: Wieża spadochronowa

The Parachute Tower is located in Kościuszko Park and is 35 meters high. It is the only preserved construction of this type in Poland. From this tower in 1939, a group of scouts were to defend Katowice against German soldiers. At the foot of the tower there is a plaque commemorating this act.

The original tower was built in 1937 and was 62 meters high, the steel structure itself was 50 meters long. During the war, it was dismantled by the Germans. In the 1950s, the tower was rebuilt, but of a lower height. Such towers were used for initial training of paratroopers.

The tower is not accessible to visitors, it’s now a monument dedicated to the defenders of Katowice and those killed and murdered by the Germans in 1939.
