The History Museum of Katowice has existed since 1976, and has been in existence since 1983. It was divided into thematic sections. In the Department of Ethnology of the City there are exhibits showing primarily everyday objects of miners, metallurgists and burghers (including clothing or work tools).

The most valuable part of collections in the Art Department is a collection of 30 portraits by the outstanding Polish painter Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz.
