The Museum of History of Katowice gathers in its collection as many as 140,000 exhibits, including historical subjects, referring to the ethnography of the region, as well as works of art or priceless old photographs.
The History Museum of Katowice has existed since 1976, and has been in existence since 1983. It was divided into thematic sections. The History Department presents documentation of the history of Upper Silesia with an emphasis on the history of Katowice itself - in this part of the museum you can see exhibits from the 18th century. In the Department of Ethnology of the City there are exhibits showing primarily everyday objects of miners, metallurgists and burghers (including clothing or work tools).
The most valuable part of collections in the Art Department is a collection of 30 portraits by the outstanding Polish painter Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz. In the Department of Photography, we managed to collect about 80 thousand photos, Such events as the entry of Soviet troops into the city or the operation of the Polish army.
