The Department's collection includes exhibits from the former culture of the working-class circles of the industrial part of Upper Silesia. Visitors can see furniture, appliances and household appliances, everyday and holiday clothing, work tools, as well as devotional articles, religious paintings and statues. The facility also offers museum workshops, folk music concerts, and ethnographic cinema studio.

The Department is located on Rymarska street on the Nikiszowiec estate, where there was a laundry, a laundry press and a public bath. The laundry was used by residents until the end of the 1980s.

The permanent exhibition of the Department includes three exhibitions. “Water and Soap the Best Whitewash” presents the decor and equipment of the former laundry and laundry press. “In our house at Nikisz” composed of three rooms: the kitchen, the first chamber, the second chamber depicts the interior of the mining workers' apartment. “Around the masters of the Janowska Group” is an exhibition of works by non-professional artists belonging to the so-called Janowska Group.
