Wyżynna Gate

Local name: Brama Wyżynna

The remains after the 16th-century fortification between Bastion of Saint Elizabeth and Karowy Bastion in Gdańsk is the Wyżynna Gate - former main entry gate to the city. Nowadays, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Gdańsk.

The Wyżynna Gate was built in Renaissance style and based on the city gates in Antwerp. The gate has three passages - the biggest one was designed for wheeled vehicles and the other two for pedestrians.

The upper part of the Wyżynna Gate consists of the three coat of arms - Coat of Arms of Poland, Coat of Arms of Gdańsk, and Coat of Arms of Prussia. Each one of them is decorated with reliefs depicting angels, unicorns and lions which hold them.

The construction also consists of the maxims in Latin. Part of them has serious tone except one - "Rum omnium Fundamenta" what in free translation means "Rum is the base of everything". This sentence is apparently an example of typical Gdańsk's sense of humour.
