The Long Lane is one of the most recognizable streets in Gdańsk. It was of great importance since its origin in the 13th century. A lot of important historic buildings are located on this street.
The Long Lane begins at Golden Gate and ends at Green Gate. Together with its extension - the Long Market - it makes the Royal Route. However, before it became a place of pompous parades and gained the name of Royal Route because of that, it served as a merchant's route. In the past, the Long Lane was fancied by the richest inhabitants of the city who built houses there. Part of them can still be viewed to this day. A lot of monumental tenement houses also are located at the Long Lane: House of the Ferber Family, House of Uphagen (currently the museum), House of the Schumann family, Tenement House of the Czirenberg family and the Lion Castle.Less
